History

Akademiska Hus was established following a parliamentary decision in 1992 to reorganise the management of state properties handled by the National Board of Public Building into a new authority, the National Property Board, responsible for the management of buildings for cultural purposes, as well as two state companies: Akademiska Hus AB and Vasakronan AB.

The reason for the reorganisation was the profit management approach introduced into state administration and which led to the end of the National Board of Public Building’s monopoly on providing state authorities with premises. The authorities were granted independent responsibility for the provision of buildings and the freedom to lease premises suited to their needs from public or private property owners.
