Through A Working Lab Flemingsberg, Akademiska Hus will be able to offer additional offices and laboratories where students, researchers and the business community can meet on campus. Karolinska Institutet currently has operations in both Solna and Flemingsberg. In collaboration with Akademiska Hus, space is now being made available for more flexible use between the two campus areas for students, researchers, university staff as well as A Working Lab's members, making the premises in Flemingsberg an important addition to creating a bridge between academia and business where unique opportunities can be found for collaborations, growth and development can occur. The node in Flemingsberg will also provide an opportunity to explore how new solutions for increased space efficiency can be developed.
- A more flexible offer for A Working Lab's members is to strengthen the business with a node also in Flemingsberg, which is now also becoming a reality. We have a high demand for laboratory premises and offices on Campus Solna today and thanks to the node on Campus Flemingsberg, we are opening up for more members and even more collaboration between students, researchers, entrepreneurs and start-up companies in life science," says Åsa Johansson. director of A Working Lab at Akademiska Hus.
Growing demand
There is great interest in this type of environment and there are currently 133 members and about 30 companies operating in the environments at A Working Lab Innomedicum in Solna. There is particularly great pressure to rent lab space, a demand that will now be possible to meet through the new node. In addition to labs and offices, the premises in Flemingsberg will also provide access to meeting rooms and an auditorium.
"We welcome the new node in Flemingsberg, which creates further opportunities to strengthen the life science cluster in the region and make the research and innovation structure available to more people," says Hans Möller, CEO of Karolinska Institutet Holding AB.
A Working Lab Innomedicum at Campus Solna is today an important meeting place and community for the life science industry. By sharing laboratories and instruments in the same way as the office space in the co-working part, completely new opportunities open up for more people in the industry. In this way, members can keep costs down and at the same time have access to environments adapted to their needs. The new node in Flemingsberg is located at Alfred Nobels Allé 10 and is planned to open in the spring of 2022. The initiative is part of a pilot project with high hopes of becoming a permanent operation.
About A Working Lab – a national concept
A Working Lab is Akademiska Hus' national concept for co-working. This service offering creates the conditions for completely new ways of researching, working and studying in the real estate company's premises close to campus. In the autumn of 2019, A Working Lab – Johanneberg Science Park – opened at Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg, followed by A Working Lab Universum in Umeå and A Working Lab Innomedicum on Campus Solna in the spring of 2020. In January 2022, A Working Lab took over the operation of the co-working environment THINGS at KTH Campus in Stockholm.
A membership gives access to all A Working Labs across the country. Together, the different environments form a national network that opens up and connects Sweden's campuses, where everything from expertise and experience to booking systems and development costs are shared. As a member, for example, you can easily work at A Working Lab in Umeå for a day, even if you normally have your workplace in Stockholm.
