Trees in the urban environment have many positive effects on both biodiversity and the surrounding environment, something that Akademiska Hus wants to protect. In this case, it has also been a requirement to preserve the tree in order to get an approved detailed plan. Therefore, Akademiska Hus puts a lot of resources and time together with the Parks and Nature Administration in the City of Gothenburg, which has produced a comprehensive work description to create the best possible conditions for the tree to cope with the stresses that occur around it. For example, sun protection has been installed on the trunk and pruning of both the tree's crown and roots has been supervised by arborists. The work also involves moisture measurement, watering, fertilization, any build-up pruning of the tree crown and annual control inspection.
As one of Sweden's largest land managers, the outdoor environments around our properties are a central part of our work. Campuses are often rich in green environments and therefore constitute an important platform for ecological, environmental and social benefits. The School's location in the middle of the city with limited green areas around it makes it extra important to preserve what is on the site.
Other plants are reused
The construction project Handelshögskolan is one of two pilot projects in reuse that were started together with Återbruk i Väst in 2020. The project included a lot of reuse of materials and inventory, but they also chose to look at the outdoor environment. The plants that, unlike the tree, did not have the opportunity to grow further on the site were given new life in a recycling park on Medicinareberget in Gothenburg. Today, several of the plants from the School of Business, Economics and Law have been moved again, including to Chalmers where they have been given a more permanent location.
