Redevelopment creates state-of-the-art premises with shareable areas for green tech

Akademiska Hus is investing just over SEK 200 million in an extensive renovation of the Maskrosen building on Campus Ultuna in Uppsala. The goal is to attract more innovative companies, especially in green tech, to the area with new attractive lab and office environments, and to strengthen Campus Ultuna's green profile.

Maskrosen is a department building from the 1970s that was vacated when the Department of Soil and Environment at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) moved to new premises within the campus area. With its central and natural location on campus, the building is in the spotlight for Ultuna's visitors – a location that will also become even more central when Uppsala Municipality's plans for increased high-capacity public transport are realized, and which will then link Ultuna even more closely with the city.

The just over 9,000 m2 large Maskrosen will undergo a complete renovation with a focus on reuse to be transformed into a modern environment with offices, labs and product development areas. There will also be the possibility of a cultivation room and storage, and the building will be equipped with solar cells on the roof and smart technical solutions for reduced energy consumption. With six entrances and a generous ground floor, there will be a great deal of flexibility that enables the division of premises for many conceivable businesses. The concept is based on the idea of a sharing economy with common meeting areas and functions on the ground floor.

Sketch of the Dandelion

"In Maskrosen, it is possible to rent areas from about 500 m2 and up, and we are already seeing a lot of interest. Here we create conditions for companies in the green industries to grow and develop on campus, while the location provides proximity to SLU and the research conducted within the university. Converting an existing building is also a way for Akademiska Hus to use our existing property portfolio instead of building new, which is essential if we are to achieve our goal of a climate-neutral business. says Anna Alsborger, Property Director at Akademiska Hus.

Part of Green Innovation Park

The dandelion will be an important addition to the Green Innovation Park (GIP), which is a joint initiative by Akademiska Hus and SLU with the aim of offering a stimulating and value-creating arena for meetings between academia, business and society. At Campus Ultuna there is today a wide range of companies of different sizes, ranging from start-ups to scale ups and larger established companies and industry organizations.

The reconstruction of Maskrosen is planned to begin in June 2023 and be completed in early 2025.
