In September 2022, Akademiska Hus began construction of the new housing, which is now ready and offers students and researchers accommodation close to campus in the new Rosendal district in Uppsala. The building, which has been named Aquila, consists of 13,000 square meters divided into a high-rise section of twelve storeys and a low-rise section of six storeys. The location in Rosendal, directly adjacent to Ångström and BMC, connects the campus with retail, service and other development that is now taking place in the area.
"It is very gratifying that we have today inaugurated our new homes in Uppsala and welcomed students and researchers to their new home. With Aquila in Rosendal, we are building the campus together with the city. In addition, student and researcher housing contributes to the campus becoming even more vibrant for more hours of the day," says Christian Jönsson, Property Area Manager at Akademiska Hus.
V-Dala blocks leases Aquila from Akademiska Hus and is the party that in turn rents out the apartments to students and doctoral students.
"With these apartments, we strengthen V-Dala's position as the nation with the most student housing. Something that is new to us is the really large apartments that are shared with four or six residents. We call our homes in Aquila Misteln, in line with our latest builds, Majklockan and Ängsklockan. Misteln is Västmanland's provincial flower," says Rolf Kroon, treasurer of the nation.
Both shared accommodation and classic one-room apartments
The new student and researcher housing is built according to Akademiska Hus' housing concept, which means that Aquila contains different types of apartments - everything from classic studios with their own kitchen to apartments where up to six people share up to 140 m2 with large common areas such as living rooms. bathroom and kitchen. Sharing accommodation offers many advantages. It promotes social community and thus counteracts the feeling of loneliness that many students experience when they move to a new city.
"In the shared apartments, the residents also get more living space overall than if you rent a regular one-room apartment. Shared housing is also positive from a sustainability perspective in that functions and spaces can be shared. Comparatively, we can reduce the climate footprint by 25 per cent in a shared apartment for four people than four regular one-room apartments," says Linda Teng, concept manager for student and researcher housing at Akademiska Hus.
Akademiska Hus has invested approximately SEK 360 million in Aquila, the construction of which started in September 2022. The project also includes the social green meeting places that exist in the courtyard and the reconstruction of three older listed buildings totalling 350 square meters, which will be used for bicycle storage, among other things.
