On 13 July 1954, Reactor 1, R1, was brought into operation after several years of construction. The research at R1 primarily focused on studying the properties of neutrons and other particles, as well as radioactive radiation. Another important task was producing radioactive materials for cancer radiation therapy. Research continued until 1970 when the reactor was permanently shut down. R1 was dismantled in 1982, and its remains are now stored at the Forsmark final repository for low-level radioactive waste. Over the years, R1 has also been used as a unique venue for artists and groups such as Madonna (in the music video "Nothing Really Matters"), Moderna Dansteatern, Cullbergbaletten, Riksteatern, and the Swedish Radio Choir.
Welcome to experience R1 live!
