The BioCentre at Campus Ultuna brings together activities in the life sciences to promote collaboration between teachers, researchers and students. Here, molecules, genes, cells and microorganisms are studied in modern premises with a high international standard.
The creation of BioCentrum on Campus Ultuna is part of the university's goal of co-locating related activities. At BioCentrum, activities revolve around life sciences and studies of life's smallest components: molecules, genes, cells and microorganisms.
The idea behind BioCentrum is to reduce the distance between teachers, researchers and students to increase the opportunity for collaboration. It has modern premises where a stimulating research and educational environment of a high international standard is offered.
An example of modern research environments is the phytotron, an advanced greenhouse, which is located in the basement of the building. At one of the courtyards there is the powerful NMR equipment that enables analyses of metabolism in living cells and structure determination of molecules. There is also the biological training laboratory for teaching.
BioCentrum was environmentally certified in 2013 according to the Swedish Green Building Council, new production 2.0.
The building's BioCentre meets the requirements for the Swedish Green Building Council's Silver standard. The Swedish Green Building Council is a certification system for creating environmentally sustainable buildings. It is based on Swedish building and authority regulations as well as Swedish construction practices. The Green Building Council is an acknowledgement of important qualities of a building in terms of energy, indoor environment and materials, and is used for newly produced and existing buildings regardless of size. In the Green Building Council, a building can achieve the grade of bronze, silver or gold. Behind the certification is the non-profit association Sweden Green Building Council (SGBC).
Being a tenant in a certified building means a responsibility in the use of the premises and the building to create the least possible environmental impact.
