With Karolinska Institutet's 65,000 sqm workspace Biomedicum, the campus concept of "building in a park" is turned inside out to "park in a building," resulting in a structure that creates an identity for a world-class scientific research environment. KI at Campus Solna is known for its green park area, making "park in a building" a guiding principle in the design of Biomedicum, where material choices and colors both inside and out exude timelessness and modernity simultaneously.
The new building, completed in 2018, is spread over 11 floors and consists of four sections. Externally, the slanted glass panels create the building's identity, with the glass sometimes reflecting and sometimes being completely transparent, depending on the weather.
The ground floor is an open environment for everyone with its public functions such as a café, exhibition, auditorium, and conference rooms. Between Biomedicum's laboratory quarters, open spaces are formed that extend from the atrium to the facade through all floors. Here, views of the surroundings are provided, and visual contact between floors is created through openings in the floor slabs.
