Welcome to the home of the Faculty of Science at the University of Gothenburg. There are flexible labs and learning environments together with offices and study places in a nice environment.
Natrium is located at the top of Medicinareberget and was completed in 2023. The building was commissioned by the University of Gothenburg and designed by Kanozi Architects and consists of two seven-storey buildings and an intermediate atrium. Around the atrium there are advanced labs, learning environments and offices. Research is conducted here in areas such as biology, environmental sciences, chemistry, molecular biology, marine sciences, earth sciences and conservation. The atrium houses study spaces and several works of art.
The name Natrium is a multi-level play on words derived from the element sodium (natrium in Swedish), the connection to the word science through the initial letters and also to the atrium in the middle of the house.
Natrium is certified in the highest ranking according to Swedish Building Council. There is a solid work from all parties involved behind the certification. For example, the façade and windows are designed to reduce energy losses and heat radiation. During the construction period, great focus was placed on choosing sustainable building materials and, where possible, also locally produced, for example, the steel reinforcement in the house comes from Norway.
On the roof there are 750 sqm of solar cells which, together with demand-controlled ventilation and lighting, provide reduced electricity consumption.
