General information

The main building is referred to by some as the Physics Centre. However, it is not the official name of the building, but only the name of the construction project. The name Fysikcentrum comes from the fact that it was initially intended that the physics departments at Stockholm University and the Royal Institute of Technology themselves would be housed in the building.

The building was designed by Henning Larsen (1925-) and inaugurated by King Carl XVI Gustav in 2001. The facade, which is shaped like an arch, is 200 meters long and curves around the round entrance building (Rotunda). The rotunda contains a library, an auditorium, and is crowned by an outdoor terrace and a dome. In this dome there is an observatory that houses the famous AlbaNova telescope. The telescope is one of Sweden's largest optical telescopes with a mirror diameter of one meter and a focal length of eleven meters.
