Maskrosen – a three-storey lab and office building

Maskrosen is a laboratory and office building that is now being converted into a modern and attractive office and lab environment. Our aim is to create a pleasant and stimulating environment for green companies to operate in.

About Maskrosen

Maskrosen is now undergoing a complete renovation and is being transformed into a modern and attractive office and lab environment. As part of this, two new atriums are created, which create new opportunities in the building.

The concept is based on the idea of a sharing economy with common areas and functions. With its structure, the building has a large number of possible divisions of the premises for different types of activities.

The building has previously been used by SLU's Department of Soil Science and was vacated in 2015.

  • Completion: Q1 2025
  • Tenants: Companies
  • Activity: Laboratory and Office Building
  • Architects: Tengbom and LINK arkitektur
  • Local area: ca 8 000 sqm
  • City: Uppsala
  • Campus: Ultuna/Green Innovation Park

Common areas and offices

The main entrance of Maskrosen will continue to be from the north. A main thoroughfare runs straight through the centre of the building. To this will be connected cross-connections that also connect to the new atriums.

In the southern part of the building, common functions such as lunch and break rooms, larger meeting and conference rooms and more, as well as environmental rooms, will be gathered.

The upper floor of the northern part of the building will continue to be used as office space. The main structure will be retained, but the premises will be renovated to modern standards. A new elevator is installed for access to the floor. The roof surfaces around the new atriums are used for a larger facility with solar panels.

On the lower floor, the premises around the atriums are primarily  used as office space. The innermost parts of the plane are used for laboratory activities.

The atriums function in this plane as a collective social Sites. In addition to plenty of storage space, there are also the building's technical facilities; On the lower floor there are also suitable spaces such as climate chambers, cultivation rooms or workshops.

Downstairs from the entrance there are common areas for bicycles and storage facilities. Arrival by car for smaller deliveries is also available in this plane.

Labs

Laboratories set specific requirements for premises depending on the type of laboratory activities that are conducted. Factors such as security, light regulation and humidity and temperature requirements are examples of things that place demands on the premises.

In Maskrosen, laboratories are placed on two floors in the inner parts of the building along the central corridor where they can receive skylight from the lantern in the corridor.

A careful renovation

Together with our customers, we at Akademiska Hus have high ambitions in sustainability. Our role as a long-term property owner provides an incentive to build wisely and sustainably.

Creating efficient and sustainable buildings

In Maskrosen, we do this by:

  1. Certify according to the Swedish Green Building Council with the goal of achieving the criteria for the Swedish Green Building Council's Silver standard.
  2. Carry out a reuse inventory to primarily enable reuse within the project and secondarily offer materials for other projects.
  3. Analyze and calculate the building's climate footprint to minimize it.
  4. New materials must be approved according to the building materials assessment.
  5. Environmental inventory to ensure that there are no hazardous substances.
