New building for the Faculty of Fine and Performing Arts

Together with the University of Gothenburg, Akademiska Hus is building Konstnärliga. This project will bring together the activities of the Faculty of Fine, Applied and Performing Arts under one roof. The project includes a renovation of the existing Artisten building and the construction of two new buildings designed to meet the needs of the Faculty of Fine, Applied and Performing Arts.

About Konstnärliga

Together with the University of Gothenburg, Akademiska Hus is undertaking the "Konstnärliga" project. This involves a renovation and extension for the entire Faculty of Fine and Performing Arts, strategically located close to some of the city's major cultural institutions and the public transport hub Korsvägen. By enabling all art forms to be gathered in new, suitable premises at the Näckrosen university campus, they will become an important part of the interdisciplinary meeting place for the humanities, art, and culture being created there.

In 2015, Akademiska Hus conducted a parallel assignment for the development of the entire university area around Renströmsparken. Tham & Videgård Architects submitted a proposal for the Faculty of Fine and Performing Arts, which was further refined in a feasibility study and became the basis for a new detailed plan. The detailed plan was adopted by the municipal council and came into legal force on June 22, 2020. In the autumn of 2022, the City Planning Office also granted a building permit for the project, which is expected to start at the very beginning of 2023.

The project

  • Construction start: February 2023
  • Completion: Preliminary Phases 2025-2027
  • Tenant: Faculty of Fine, Applied and Performing Arts at the University of Gothenburg
  • Activity: Artistic Education and Research
  • Architects: Tham and Videgård Architects
  • Facility ID: O0009038
  • City: Göteborg
  • Campus: Campus Näckrosen

Flexible premises

The investment consists of a reconstruction of part of the existing Artisten building and an extension with two new six-storey buildings called Kuben and Längan. The environments will include workshops, multi-purpose halls, dance halls, concert halls, theatres, galleries, studios, music rooms, offices, cafés, and restaurants.

The premises will have a flexible design so that they can be adapted according to the university's future needs. The co-location in the new building means that the faculty's need for rented premises will be reduced by 25 percent compared to the space they rent today. The renovation and extension project comprises a total of approximately 45,000 m², of which the Faculty of Fine and Performing Arts intends to lease 26,200 m². Other areas include a parking garage and attractive office space for external activities linked to academia or which, in the longer term, can provide space for the faculty to grow.

Entrance to Västlänken train station

The project also includes an entrance to Västlänken train station Korsvägen, which will be integrated into the new extension Längan, located at the corner of Johannebergsgatan and Olof Wijksgatan. The location has been developed in close collaboration with the City of Gothenburg with the aim of minimizing changes to the urban environment. With this addition, the building and the university will open up further to the city, increasing throughput and street life on the surrounding streets and improving the opportunity for sustainable travel to and from campus.

The renovation and extension started in early 2023. The Faculty of Fine and Performing Arts' occupancy is planned to begin in a first phase in 2025 and be completed in 2027.
