The new building for the School of Business, Economics and Law

Akademiska Hus is constructing a new building at the School of Business, Economics and Law in central Gothenburg. The building will enable the faculty to expand and develop its education and research in economics and law. The project also means that one of the West Link's station entrances will be integrated into the new building.

About the New Building of the School of Business, Economics and Law

The School of Business, Economics and Law's programmes are attractive and among the most sought after in Sweden. But the existing premises are overcrowded and the departments are spread over several different addresses. The new building creates larger and more flexible spaces for both staff and students, and also makes it possible to gather the entire School under one roof.

The construction project is characterized by synergies effects. The School of Business, Economics and Law will have new purpose-built premises, while the possible exit from the West Link can be fitted into the sensitive urban environment of the building on the corner of Vasagatan and Haga kyrkogata. The city is being developed while keeping the green Vasaallén intact as an attractive walking and cycling route.

The project

  • Construction start: 2021 (2020)
  • Completion: 2027
  • Tenant: University of Gothenburg
  • Activity: Teaching and Research
  • Architects: Johannes Norlander Arkitektur
  • Gross Area: 10 800 sqm
  • City: Göteborg
  • Campus: Gothenburg Haga and Linné

Architectural Competition

The building is the result of an architectural competition that ended in 2015. The winner was Johannes Norlander Arkitektur with his entry Annex. The competition jury, which consisted of representatives from Akademiska Hus, the University of Gothenburg, Architects Sweden, the City of Gothenburg and the Swedish Transport Administration, believed that Annex defines the connection with the street and the cityscape while at the same time giving the old high-rise building (Nyrén's high-rise building) a reborn meaning.

Sustainability

The new building comprises approximately 10,800 square meters of gross area spread over eight floors above ground and one basement level. Among other things, it houses a new main entrance, two auditoriums, student services, café, offices and student workplaces.

As part of Akademiska Hus' sustainability work, materials with a high climate impact, such as marble floors, limestone façades and granite stone, have been reused to be reused in other construction projects. The marble floor from the old building, for example, will be used for a footbridge in the new building for the School of Business, Economics and Law.

The project started in 2020 but officially started construction in 2021 and the building is estimated to be completed in 2027.
