New student housing in the Remus project

The project in Frescati Hage aims to transform this historic 1940s building into innovative and sustainable housing for students and researchers. By combining modern amenities with sustainable design, Akademiska Hus seeks to create an environment that fosters both academic success and personal well-being.

About Remus

The building in Frescati Hage, dating back to the 1940s, was used as classrooms and administrative offices for the Department of Special Education at Stockholm University until the end of 2022. Since the department's move to the new Albano campus, the building has been vacant.

The new project aims to transform this historic structure into innovative and sustainable housing that meets the diverse needs of both students and researchers. Akademiska Hus also seeks to create a dynamic environment that promotes both academic success and personal well-being by combining modern amenities with social spaces and sustainable design.

The project

  • Construction start: 2023
  • Completion: Summer 2025
  • Purpose: Student and Researcher Housing
  • Number of Apartments: 72 apartments, accommodating 86 students and researchers
  • Campus: Frescati
  • Total Area: 4 000 sqm

Classic studio apartments and shared housing

The nearly 4 000 s.q.m building will, after renovations, accommodate 72 apartments with various configurations for 86 residents, along with a shared space accessible to everyone in the building. Recognizing that new students often have an openness to living and socializing with new acquaintances, while more experienced students typically prefer living alone, Akademiska Hus aims to meet the diverse preferences of both students and researchers. Therefore, the apartments in Remus will be designed to include both classic studio apartments with private kitchens, as well as units where up to six people share common areas like bathrooms and kitchens.

Reuse and gentle renovation

As part of Akademiska Hus's commitment to achieving a zero carbon footprint, the project has included an extensive inventory of the existing building with the aim of reusing as much material as possible. The stairwells, along with their doors and lighting, will be preserved. Additionally, the elegant boardroom and fixed bookshelves will be relocated to new positions within the common areas of the building. In line with the sustainability goals and energy-saving initiatives, plans are also in place to install solar panels on the roof.

The transformation of the building into residential units will be conducted with great care, taking into account its green classification by the Stockholm City Museum. Consequently, the existing architectural design will be preserved without alterations.
