Our path to Net-Zero by 2040

The real estate industry accounts for a large part of society's climate footprint. Inorder to achieve the radical climate transition that society needs, the industry must change fundamentally. As one of Sweden's largest real estate companies, we want to take the lead. In the autumn of 2024, we raised our ambition level further with stricter and industry leading climate targets, and by 2040 we will have achieved a 90 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared to 2019. The remaining ten per cent we neutralise through negative emissions. The targets have been validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), Net-Zero Standard and are in line with the Paris Agreement and what research requires to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees.

Erik Florman, head of sustainability, at Akademiska Hus:

“With science-based climate targets, we actively take responsibility in the global transition and develop climate-efficient campuses – together, we are building a sustainable future for coming generations.”

What is Science Based Targets?

Science-based targets provide companies with a clearly-defined path to reduce emissions in line with the Paris Agreement goals, to prevent the worst effects of climate change and future-proof business growth. Companies' targets are considered science-based if they are in line with what the latest climate science deems necessary to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement – to limit global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.

Facts about Net-Zero emissions for Akademiska Hus

The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) is a partnership between the United Nations, the World Resources Institute, the World Wide Fund for Nature and the charity CDP. SBTi's requirements for Akademiska Hus with regard to Net-Zero are:

  1. To reduce theCO2e intensity in Scope 1+2 by at least 90% by 2040.
  2. To reduce all Scope 3 emissions by at least 90% by 2040.
  3. To neutralise the remaining emissions with negative emissions, for example through carbon capture.

Scope 1 = Direct emissions from things that the emitter owns or controls.
Scope 2 = Indirect emissions created in the production of the energy purchased.
Scope 3 = Indirect emissions produced by customers who use the company's products or those produced by suppliers who manufacture products that the organization uses

Climate budget for transparency about the way forward

We call it the climate budget. A way for us to report and make visible how we step by step, year by year, are moving forward towards Net-Zero – 2040. Being transparent about our way forward is a way to clarify both for ourselves but also for the industry at large how we are moving forward. It is an important policy instrument for our entire business and it is through it that we set limits for permitted emissions in the future.
