The university library's roof is being rebuilt

Major maintenance work is currently underway on the roof of the university library. This means that there will be some noise from time to time. We are renovating the library's roof and at the same time changing the house's downpipes to create better drainage for rain in the courtyard. These changes will make the house more resistant to large amounts of rainfall. The reconstruction is to be completed in the fall of 2024.

The salon opens today

Today we have opened up the Salon on the ground floor of Universum. The surface is intended to be used for relaxation and activities, a bit like a nice living room. There are board games and ping pong tables available for those who want. For the time being, the Salon will be open for everyone to use on weekdays between approx. 8.00-17.00, on days when it is not booked for any specific event. We have furnished the salon almost exclusively with recycled furniture and furnishings. A good example of how new doesn't always have to be better! For those who want to book the space for a private event, we refer you to Universumhuset.se

Kickoff for new building at Umeå University

The start is now underway for the new building, which will meet Umeå University's needs for teaching and office premises, but also remedy the lack of exam rooms in close proximity to the campus. With its strategic and central location, the building will become the university area's future hub. The new building, which was called Hus K in the planning stage, connects Universum, Aula Nordica and the House of Natural Sciences and strengthens Campus Umeå's physical identity. The 9,500 square meter building will cover five floors and contain exam rooms with room for up to 540 people, which means that Umeå University can for the first time collect all its exam rooms on the main campus. There will also be premises for teaching, offices, study places and a café. - The need for new exam rooms in a central location on the campus in Umeå has long been great and it is gratifying that the work will now be started. We look forward to having access to the new flexible premises when they are ready, says Hans Adolfsson, rector at Umeå University. Flexible premises for increased premises utilization and reduced climate footprint In order to be able to use the premises in the new building as efficiently as possible, they are given flexibility so that they can be easily converted to different activities. This means, among other things, that the exam halls must be able to be converted into classrooms when the need increases, and conversely that classrooms can be used as exam halls during intensive exam periods. Through the high degree of generality and user flexibility, a sustainable building is created that is future-proofed over a long period of time. - Building sustainably and long-term is always of utmost importance to Akademiska Hus and we set high environmental standards in the development of all our construction projects. With a series of initiatives such as evaluating all system choices from a climate perspective and installing energy-efficient functions such as need-based ventilation and lighting, we ensure that the new house will be a climate-smart building. We also have a focus on reuse and will reuse some materials from other buildings within our property portfolio, says Ali Ranji, project director at Akademiska Hus. The building's frame has also been optimized based on the activities to be carried out in the premises and each part has been calculated to reduce material consumption. The concrete that will be used is green concrete, which is better for the environment than traditional concrete. Another sustainability aspect that contributes to a reduced climate footprint is that the new building was initially intended to be larger than what is now the case. By collecting data via sensors and booking systems and based on that analyzing how the university's existing premises can be used even better, Akademiska Hus and Umeå University have been able to greatly reduce the original need for new production. The new building is expected to be ready in the spring of 2025. Akademiska Hus currently estimates its investment in the project at SEK 340 million.

Akademiska Hus is investing millions in Umeå

Akademiska Hus is investing SEK 272 million in a new building on Campus Umeå. The building, which is currently under the name Hus K, will meet Umeå University's need for premises for teaching, exams and offices. With its strategic and central location in the middle of the campus, Hus K will be the area's future hub. House K is connected to Universum, Aula Nordica and Naturvetarhuset and strengthens Campus Umeå's physical identity. The 8,000 square meter building will comprise five floors and contain premises for teaching, offices, study places and a café. In House K, various examination halls are also created with room for up to 540 people, which means that Umeå University can, for the first time, gather all its examination rooms on the main campus. - An important issue in the construction is about being able to use the premises for other activities during the periods when the need for examination rooms is low. We want to increase the utilization rate of the premises and thereby reduce our climate impact, says Richard Olsson, property manager at Umeå University. Flexible premises for increased space utilization In order to be able to use the premises in House K as efficiently as possible, they are given flexibility so that they can easily be converted to different activities. This means, among other things, that the examination halls can be converted into classrooms when the need increases, and conversely that classrooms can be used as examination halls during intensive examination periods. Due to the high degree of generality and user flexibility, a sustainable building is created that is future-proof over a long period of time. - Umeå University and Akademiska Hus have ambitious sustainability goals. With a number of initiatives such as that all system choices are evaluated from a climate perspective and that the building is equipped with solar cells, we ensure that Hus K becomes a climate-smart building with a low CO2 footprint, says Peter Bohman, market area director at Akademiska Hus. Another sustainability aspect that contributes to a reduced climate footprint is that House K was originally intended to be a larger building than what is now to be built. By collecting data and analyzing how the university's existing premises can be used even better, Akademiska Hus and Umeå University have been able to greatly reduce the original need for new production. The start of construction of House K is planned for August 2022 and the building is expected to be completed in the spring of 2024.
